Abstract: |
The images and texts presented in this book arise from a collaborative project involving farmers from Ky Son commune in Viet Nam’s Ha Tinh province and CCAFS researchers during June and July, 2017. The collaborative approach used by the farmer-researcher team is known as photovoice. It has a decade long history of use in the social sciences and health fields and, like other participatory research approaches using media, raises the voices of participants as they document and discuss their daily experiences. The primary aim of this particular photovoice project was to document and disseminate knowledge about how climate change is impacting farmer livelihoods in the north-central region of Viet Nam and how farmers are reacting to these changes, particularly in ways that may be termed ‘climate-smart’. In documenting these climate-smart methods we hope these activities can serve as a guide for similarly affected areas. In the photos, we see the impact on farmers’ livelihood of weather events like flooding, landslides, extreme temperatures, and dry spells. The images also illustrate innovative approaches to crop, land, livestock, and information management which enable farmers to meet the rising challenges of our changing climate. Together with the contextual information gathered in farmer-researcher interview sessions, the photographs allow a unique and timely perspective on the serious issues posed by climate variability and the resourcefulness, adaptability, and leadership shown by the rural communities. Brought together in a book, the images and text also serve as a record of time and place. |
