Abstract:
Due to the high contribution of emission from agriculture activities, forestry sector and other land use, the role of agroforestry for low emission development (LED) shape the discourse over natural resource management as a means of influencing emission reduction policy and exercising regional economic development. The article explores the potential roles of agroforestry within the issue of LED as well as its opportunities and challenges based on a case study in Tanjung Jabung Barat District (Jambi). Here, we use RaCSA (Rapid Carbon Stock Appraisal) to analyze carbon emission on agriculture, forestry and land uses as well as REDD-Abacus SP to identify trade-off areas between carbon emission and economic benefit across the district. The study also identify which areas of the district that agroforestry can be potentially implemented and its recommendation for further emission reduction policy interventions. The study found that agroforestry practice is suitable as one of the intervention option in low emission development strategy in Tanjung Jabung Barat District since around 30 % percent CO2 emissions from land based sector at the area can be reduced by agroforestry practise. The model shows the recommended scenario by considering the type of agroforestry and the previous land use.
