Based on the village typologies identified for this study, the villages of Mempawah District were classified into two types, i.e. those that are likely to be extremely vulnerable to climate change (16 villages) and the moderately vulnerable (28 villages). Villages with peatlands (23 villages) are not included in the analysis for this study since they have a different vulnerability level than the villages having mineral soil. Villages with peatlands have a higher vulnerability level than villages with mineral soil, whether during flood or long dry season. Villages categorized as extremely vulnerable (Type 1) are located very close to oil palm companies, smallholders’ oil palm plantations, oil palm mills, mines, and main roads; have large areas covered with shrubs, a large human population, a small forest area per village; located far from deforestation areas, and have a low deforestation rate. While villages categorized as moderately vulnerable villages (Type 3) have the following characteristics: located very close to the river, have a large percentage of oil palm plantation per village, located quite far from oil palm mills and mining companies, have quite a large area of shrubs, and have a medium population density. |
