Abstract:

The debate over oil palm expansion in tropical forests often circles around the question: is palm oil truly harmful or merely misunderstood? This issue frequently mixes judgment of the crop itself with criticism of how it is produced. In fact, achieving sustainable oil palm development requires making a clear distinction between the two.
New, more socially oriented narratives are now emerging — portraying oil palm as suitable for family farming and as part of diverse agroforestry systems, rather than solely as monoculture plantations run by large corporations. However, these narratives also carry the risk of being misinterpreted if not managed carefully.
This article explores different perspectives in the palm oil debate, connecting values of nature with moral principles. By understanding these diverse viewpoints, we can foster more effective negotiations to develop inclusive oil palm value chains that promote economic growth, strengthen smallholder livelihoods, and protect environmental sustainability.
