TitleOptimizing the Corn Supply Chain in Bone Regency: Practical Insights for Sustainability and Profitability (Technical Brief No. 1)
Year2024
Call NumberPB00703-24
Abstract:
This technical brief from CIFOR-ICRAF (Land4Lives) outlines practical, model-driven solutions to optimize the corn supply chain in Bone Regency, South Sulawesi, addressing critical challenges such as high moisture content and costly long-distance transport to Makassar. By mapping the supply chain from farm to market, the model identifies three highly impactful interventions: promoting low-cost sun-drying techniques, establishing decentralized local warehousing, and diversifying raw corn into poultry feed. Sun-drying significantly reduces moisture and transport weight, thereby enhancing market value by up to 15% and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, local warehousing stabilizes prices, cuts down logistical dependencies, and provides farmers with reliable, nearby market access. Furthermore, transitioning from raw commodity sales to poultry feed production allows farmers to tap into stable local demand, capturing greater value and minimizing exposure to market fluctuations. Decentralizing the supply chain in this manner not only fosters a self-sustaining agricultural network but also strengthens regional food security and economic resilience. Notably, the adaptable framework of this optimization model can be extended beyond corn to evaluate agroforestry scenarios—integrating tree crops to support income diversification, soil conservation, and carbon sequestration efforts, thereby driving both environmental sustainability and long-term profitability.
